Depends on what you're after. For stem books, if you're okay with a digital copy, check out a website called LibGen. It's definitely grey-law kinda stuff, but I'm less bothered by it ethically since you're using it for scholarship. You can always by the book after if you really want to support the author. Other than that, check out abebooks.com and similar sites. Protip: International Edition books from India and China are almost exactly the same (if not exact copies) of their North American counterparts, but they are sold at much lower rates in the foriegn markets. Other than that, consider a used bookstore.
