  • Is Discord a Spyware?
If more FOSS projects start using an alternative (matrix, for example), more users will be hesitant to use discord. I have more reasons, like Discord community usually end up in less meaningful discussion and have significantly less searchability than a form has -- but they are not really a big problem in a closed community. • The Man Behind Mastodon Built It for This Moment
But yeah, it definitely took a closer look at what was lost from forum software and tried to bring that back to social media. Kinda similar to how Zulip is "slack chat but with forum threads" (surprisingly that small change makes it soo much nicer to keep track of discussions. It's a million times more intuitive to navigate than either Slack or Discord imo). - Source: Reddit / 4 months ago

  • $120k a year for Slack with 1k users
If you like the structure of Slack and are considering a switch, I'd love to see people switch to Zulip[0]. I've always wanted to see how well a team/org likes it after a serious trial. They have self-hosting options, too. 0: https://zulip.com. - Source: Hacker News / 6 months ago
  • Self hosted alternative to teams / slack, for file sharing and instant messaging?
One of the best solutions is missing in my Opinion: Zulip (https://zulip.com/). It has a very cool Threading model to not clutter up conversations and keep them organized, is well documented and installation is very straightforward. - Source: Reddit / 6 months ago

  • Will Bun JavaScript Take Node's Crown
Did you look at zulip? https://zulip.com/ I'm not convinced it's better than irc+proper mailing lists - but given that real users are stuck in awful mail clients (like web/Gmail or outlook) - mailing lists isn't a great option any more. Main thing I miss from zulip is a proper weechat plug-in (like wee-slack) - although the official cli client isn't terrible - it's just not irc-like. - Source: Hacker News / 8 months ago
  • Are there any kind of Discord type services?
Https://zulip.com has been pretty solid for me. - Source: Reddit / 8 months ago
  • We shouldn't use Discord to help with issues
How about Zulip? It has topics which help with organizing Q&A. Rust-lang has moved from Discord to Zulip and this is how it looks like today. - Source: Reddit / 9 months ago

  • reconnecting with the math world after retirement
During the pandemic, some online chat groups have popped up as well, mostly on Zulip. It sounds like you're looking for some community, so these would be good for catching up and integrating yourself back into the community. - Source: Reddit / 9 months ago

  • Setting up a local only NNTP server to collaborate in a group?
Another option that I don't see mentioned enough is Zulip. Don't let the IM looking interface turn you off, the idea of topics feels very much like the individual threads in NNTP without the email cruft. - Source: Reddit / 10 months ago
  • How to find open source projects to contribute
Now, I want to highlight that you may use a project in another role other than as a developer. For example, if you are using an end-user application (using a real-time chat app, like Zulip, to communicate with other people). You can still find the project source code repository, and contribute in many ways. - Source: dev.to / 10 months ago
  • I’ve been a contributor, mentor, and admin in Google Open Source programs
Here I also learned about the importance of being careful with working in a community with underage contributors. The community manager at the time (my GSoC admin) was very thoughtful about how to include the underaged GCI participants in our community forums. This led us to move from using Slack to start using Zulip, which allowed us to use features such as disabling private messaging and allow for people of any... - Source: dev.to / 10 months ago
