For the longer term migration options, I would like to recommend we set up a Xenforo forum one last time. It would be quick and easy to do, it's a well designed and maintained solution that has all the technical features we need and works well for communities like this, as demonstrated by the Spacebattles and Sufficient Velocity forums. Finally, this community will only be free of interference if we go to a place... Source: 10 months ago
Obviously forums aren't as popular as they used to be, so this topic might not be of interest to many. For folks that want to run a forum, they'd most certainly go with Discourse (Ruby), Flarum (PHP), Xenforo (PHP), NodeBB (Javascript), Nimforum (Nim) and maybe Casnode (Go). Source: about 1 year ago
For something simple, I'd look into bbpress. For something more complex (but that can still integrate with WordPress, check out Xenforo (my favorite) or Vanilla. Source: over 1 year ago
Obligatory Lobsters[0] link. You may know it well already though. If you really need to scratch that itch, maybe start your own community based around those topics? I wouldn't build it from scratch though, and use something like XenForo[1]. The web needs more forums, there's not enough of them around! Buy a XenForo[0] license and call it a day. It has all the staples of social media. 'Likes', 'Follow', 'Friend lists', 'Karma' etc [0] https://xenforo.com/. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
I like this one a lot but it is for high volume traffic, sales, sub-forums, about anything one could imagine for grouping and organizing. Aside from our version here of which serves us very well, this is my fav. =https://xenforo.com/. Source: about 2 years ago
I'm thinking about diversifying how users can access CodingHelp by opening a forum. Either ran with MyBB, phpBB or XenForo (XF). This is something I would add in 2022 as I haven't even started looking into the 3 software platforms I would choose from. I know the differences from past experiences, but I haven't used them in years. Source: over 2 years ago

With XenForo, you can set that certain user groups can only view the threads but not their content. There is also, for example, the plugin https://xenforo.com/community/resources/first-post-only.5976/. Source: almost 3 years ago
