For all us purists, who prefer soft subtitles and the flexibility it affords, it gets somewhat trickier. Subtitles exist for almost all movies and television shows on the internet. They are actually reasonably easy to add to your videos if your video matches the subtitle file's timing. The tool I use is a free extension of VLC called VLsub.
