  • Picotron Is a Fantasy Workstation
The Pico-8 is great, but https://tic80.com/ is really cool too. - Source: Hacker News / 7 days ago
  • Ask HN: Yo wants to build a game, I'm lost. What can I do?
Or the more free TIC-80. I have paid for both, but never used either enough to be able to say one or the other has any significant advantages. https://tic80.com/. - Source: Hacker News / 2 months ago
  • Yoyozo (or, how I made a Playdate game in 39KB)
Or its open source cousin TIC-80: http://tic80.com/. - Source: Hacker News / 4 months ago
  • PicoCalc
I wish the community moved to an open source option like TIC-80[0]. 0. https://tic80.com/. - Source: Hacker News / 6 months ago
  • LÖVE: a framework to make 2D games in Lua
Main differences are: 16:9 aspect ratio, no cpu limits and many languages to tinker with: lua, js, squirrel, wren, janet, wasm, ... And just recently - a Python support was added. https://tic80.com. - Source: Hacker News / 7 months ago
  • Hey, I need advice!😶
Try https://tic80.com/ instead of PICO-8, it's a free open-source alternative and still fun. Source: 12 months ago
  • Anybody working on games here?
Tho personally I've come to prefer making my games in https://love2d.org and https://tic80.com. Source: about 1 year ago
  • I chose lua to begin my coding journey. Did I do the right thing?
Start by making some games imo, unless you already have a good project in mind. https://tic80.com or https://love2d.org. Source: about 1 year ago
  • How often does PICO-8 go on sale?
In case you don't know, there's also the free education version of PICO-8. Many similar features are also available in the FOSS project TIC-80. Source: about 1 year ago
  • I want to make a game for my 4yo to learn to play video games
TIC-80 and PICO-8 are great for making quick games and learning. The limitations encourage a smaller scope and the simplicity of the tools make it easy to collab with young children on the development itself. Making a sprite is just coloring some squares after all :) Great moment to animate their little doodle on the screen and have it controlled by their input. Would recommend the book Mindstorms on using games... Source: about 1 year ago
  • What language should I teach my little sister
Since you're comfortable with Javascript, then tic-80 can be an alternative. https://tic80.com/ But pico-8 has more resources. I also enjoyed the tutorials in the Get Coding books. https://getcodingkids.com/. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Ask HN: I’m falling out of love with coding
If you're _totally_ new to game programming (like me), I found tic80 [0] or pico8 [1] (I think the latter is more popular) a really nice introduction to game programming. They are simulated "fantasy consoles" that come with a whole wack constraints, so you're somewhat limited in what you can build, but it leaves a lot of room to grok core concepts that you could then take over to Unity or Unreal or the like.... - Source: Hacker News / about 1 year ago
  • Best way to learn lua
I'm gonna echo the suggestion to make a video game; if you're a person who likes games this is by far the best way to go. Obviously love2d is brilliant but you might also take a look at https://tic80.com which is a little more all-in-one and easier to learn. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Kid friendly game design programs?
TIC-80 is very similar. I have both but did not explore them enough to say which one is better. I prefer the free license of TIC-80. Source: about 1 year ago
  • A MiniTron In 47 Lines
This is a sample code for learning, written in Moonscript for TIC-80:. - Source: dev.to / about 1 year ago
  • When was the last deal offer? Any default deals per year?
The only time I saw a deal for pico 8 was during the bundle for racial justice on itch io. I don't think pico 8 has regular sales, at least I haven't been aware of them. If you want to use the program but don't want/can't pay the asking price, you can use the free educational version, which is just like the real deal, except for some exporting limitations https://www.pico-8-edu.com/ or you can try tic 80, which is... • Pico-8 CPU
    Always worth mentioning is TIC-80 [1], another fantasy console/computer. Which is open source [2]. [1]: https://tic80.com/ [2]: https://github.com/nesbox/TIC-80. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • is it possible to create a game using your phone?
Here's something I tried: app Tic80 makes it very much possible to make retro game. Plus that it's also self contained - you make music, sounds, pixelart, code inside the app. Engine Love2D is a little more complex, I used it wth Acode and it's plausible to make something proper with it, but you need separate software for sprites etc. Good luck mate. • After 18 months... I am throwing up the white flag. But I still have a desire to learn more tech. What field can I learn more about without coding?
If you're tight on money, TIC-80 is a free open-source alternative. The only downside is that the community is way smaller. Source: over 1 year ago
  • New to lua, how to learn it?
I would advise you to start with two things - the book "Programming in Lua" and TIC-80 to master the basic concepts. Source: over 1 year ago
  • ClockworkPi – uConsole, “fantasy console” for indie game developers
It's a small linux handheld with a slightly anemic ARM cpu, a full keyboard, and metal case. There are various "fantasy consoles" people make video games on, like the piko-8^1 (which the indie darling Celeste was originally developed for) and the TIC-80^2 (Providing a more PC-like experience). It might be best to think of them as emulators for computers/devices that never existed. They're often programed in LUA... - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
