Your cat may or may not be capable of decimating ecosystems (with help from other cats of course). I saw you mention getting a collar when he came back -- we have so many outdoor cats in this area that what I've done is get a bright orange collar as suggested by the Kitty Convict project, and embroider on there some variation of "GET ME HOME" and your phone number, so there's no ambiguity about where your buddy belongs.
