OpenRGB required a kernel patch, because it is trying to interface over I2C from userspace and one of the I2C controllers it needed support for didn't have a functional driver in the kernel yet. One of the biggest problems with the I2C bus, is that the kernel misses a lot of drivers for the various I2C controllers because the data sheets are usually not publicly available.
