  IMhO, one company tacled that very problem head on and did a fantastic job and it's my by far prefered chat (+ more) app today. Ironically, that company, https://keybase.io, got acquired by Zoom. Keybase still works today (thankfully), but there are AFAIK no guarantees for how long.   I agree with OP though that a Helm chart and self-hosted install documentation/support would probably help make this project much more popular. I self-host bitwarden, gitlab, etc and while I'm generally OK with all of those as SaaS, I just like running stuff myself. I'm weird.
