  • Whistleblowers Take Note: Don’t Trust Cropping Tools
A very simple and easy way to pretty much guarantee an image doesn’t contain unnecessary metadata, can’t be uncropped, etc. is to first convert it to JPEG and then run it through an image optimizer (like ImageOptim [1]). Don’t use cloud software for any of this — do it all locally. [1]: https://imageoptim.com/mac. - Source: Hacker News / about 1 year ago
  • File size of C1 TIFFs
Also for the web you want the best size to quality ratio - C1, photoshop and are not ideal in this regard. • Are there any image compressors for iOS?
I'm looking for something to simply cut down on image sizes for things like email and discord. On my Mac I use ImageOptim, but I'd love an iOS equivalent (running on the device) for when I'm on the go or have a shaky internet connection. Source: about 1 year ago
  • ExifTool – Read, Write and Edit Meta Information
I see a few people using this to scrub metadata, which is great. If you're on Mac and don't mind having a UI, there's a tool I've been using for all my images that both scrubs metadata and uses the latest compression techniques. Supports most image formats too: https://imageoptim.com/mac Not affiliated, just love it. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago

Btw. • What could be causing JPEG files to appear low quality when uploaded to platforms like Facebook or Google, but appear normal/good quality as a saved JPG on my desktop?
Try compressing them on your own before uploading them anywhere else. Different sites will have different ways to compress, sometimes more aggressive than others. If you're uploading 1MB+ images they're gonna be aggressively trying to shave it down to around 100kb. So compress them first so you can control the result a little more.
