Social recommendations and mentions

We have tracked the following product recommendations or mentions on various public social media platforms and blogs. They can help you see what people think about ICANN WHOIS and what they use it for.
  • GoDaddy stole my domain before I renewed it, can I do anything?
If you do a WHOIS lookup on the domain (usually at lookup.icann.org), then it should tell you the current registrant. There should be an email address or a way of contacting the current registrant. You may need to also go to the registrar where it's currently registered to contact them. But it's an ICANN requirement/rule that there MUST be a way to contact the current registrant through email or a form. Source: 10 months ago
  • How do I keep my domain name?
Did you try doing a search on whois/lookup? Doing so, you will be able to see if your domain name is now handled by a different registrar. If that turns up no helpful results & the company you originally leased the domain name from was accredited by ICANN; it may be worthwhile to reach out on their support page. Source: 10 months ago
  • Just got this in the mail
If you follow some of the whois information from https://lookup.icann.org/ for the domain the email is associated with (www.yourconcernedfriends.org) you can find an address in Reykjavik. Googling that address shows MULTIPLE lawsuits and warnings about various scams. Source: 11 months ago
  • Have you heard of this ? Potential scam ;
It's probably a very new website, you can check the age using WHOIS info: https://lookup.icann.org/. Source: 12 months ago
  • Does its a scam of selling or making an investment at Trouva Mall and using cryptocurrency?
In the future, you can use https://lookup.icann.org/ to check unfamiliar websites. If they're than a year old or registered for less than a year, those are red flags. Source: 12 months ago
  • Domain.com
Do not use a hosts domain checker, use https://lookup.icann.org/ or similar to check directly with the registry. Source: 12 months ago
  • Pro-tip: choose a random area code when you sign up for a new plan
There’s also some money that goes to the WHOIS database, to keep their system up and running. That’s basically a global database that tracks who owns which domains. It’s publicly available, and every site registration pays a little bit towards it to keep it running. It’s run by ICANN, which is a non-profit that basically handles all of the backend paperwork when a new domain gets registered. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Is there any chance that someone could find the owner of the bank account i've transfered money to? Been scammed like a noob. Police and bank in which i've transfered money to (openbank.es) can't do nothing.
In the future, use ICANN lookup to check the domain for any site you're not sure about: https://lookup.icann.org. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Am I right for recommending a Domain Registrar switch ?
That company is probably just a reseller for a bigger registrar like enom or TUCOWS. You should be able to lookup who the underlying registrar is at https://lookup.icann.org. Normally you manage your domain through your reseller but if they go out of business, get hacked or make it so you can access your domain then you can go to the actual registrar and they should be able to get you access again. • DNS Leak question
Then, look up in what country that IP is with https://lookup.icann.org/. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Namecheap is buying and holding onto domains you're interested in
    > never search anywhere except Google or Amazon domain Will these two are probably safe, if you want to be certain I suggest checking with the registry operator itself. You can often find these on https://nic.tld. For example: nic.io, nic.nl, nic.cloud, etc. For com/net/org check ICANN directly: https://lookup.icann.org/. - Source: Hacker News / about 1 year ago
  • A Guide to spotting dropshippers
Finally, if you’re skeptical of the brand, look up their domain name on https://lookup.icann.org. Does the information that comes back match up with what the brand claims? Can you even get any information, or are they using a service to hide it? Legitimate brands do not do that. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Is this website a scam ?
With a WHOIS or ICANN lookup like https://lookup.icann.org/. Source: about 1 year ago
  • YSK that when you open marketing emails, they immediately know that you have opened it.
You are required to give your contact information to register a domain(required by ICANN, the "DMV" of the internet), this includes your address and phone number. You can and should enable privacy protection so this information isn't publicly accessible(in more technical terms: this sets a corporation as the WHOIS contact info since the WHOIS-DB is publically accessible: https://lookup.icann.org/). • If I create and subscribe to a domain name via ProtonMail and then move away from Proton, is there a way for me to keep this domain name?
You need to look up where the domain name is registered, and then you can "point" the domain name to any other service, such as a web host or other email provider. You do this via the DNS. You can look up the domain registrar at lookup.icann.org. Source: about 1 year ago
  • bvtek.ca Out of Business?
Https://lookup.icann.org says that domain is not owned by anybody. Sorry. Source: about 1 year ago
  • It’s a scam isn’t it?
Test for dodgy retail sites 1. Is the item you wish to buy in short supply? ( think GPU/PS5 etc)? Yes? beware! 2. Is the price shown on the website much lower than most other sites selling the same item? Yes? beware! 3. Is the item being advertised on social media or Youtube? yes? beware!! 4. Does the website use a gTLD such as .vip/.store/.xyz/.shop/.pay/.secure etc? 5. Have you checked the sites whois data... Source: about 1 year ago
  • Migrated domain to Cloudflare, 120h later it is even not propagated to their DNS servers.
Check their support. I've moved about 80 domains to CF DNS in the past month without issue. Once I pointed the NS to CF it took maybe 10-15 minutes to propagate. Best place to start is a whois on icann to check NS's: https://lookup.icann.org/. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Is this a legit website
Use lookup.icann.org to lookup CRYPTBLTGRP.COM It will tell you it was created on 2022-11-14 00:32:53 UTC. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Twins have begun using twins.com
Domain ownership is easy to look up. https://lookup.icann.org. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Dealership contacted us via marketplace to purchase truck- potential scam or legitimate?
You said all the phone calls were initiated by them. Relying on caller ID isn't the best thing to use as verification as phone numbers can be spoofed. If you want to verify, find their number through their official website (if you want to be super vigilant, check when the website was created by using https://lookup.icann.org/) and call them. If you can reach them that way, its more than likely legit. Source: about 1 year ago
