  • I want to create IMDB for Open source projects
I'm not sure how much value making something "not fugly" really matters. Design should be based on functionality, not anti-fugliness. In my experience, design considerations should come after building a successful growth "feedback loop." (Or whatever you want to call it.) At that point, you may decide making your website look "polished" isn't even necessary. IMDB was certainly quite ugly for a long time.... - Source: Hacker News / 9 days ago
  • Ask HN: What is the ideal format to structure AI prompts?
User input does not need to be sanitized if it is programmatically inserted into the document as the value of a key in a regular dict section. To work, I assume the target model needs to be trained on Braq documents with emphasis on the fact that only the top unnamed section contains root instructions (equivalent to the "system" role in ChatML). • Show HN: Skyvern – open-source browser automation tool
This can definitely be used for front end testing. Just tell it to do something like a user and monitor whether it's successful or not Here's a prompt example to try out { "url": "https://news.ycombinator.com", "navigation_goal": "goal is met if you see a post from basiep2. Terminate if you don't" }. - Source: Hacker News / about 1 month ago

  • I don't want anything your AI generates
Objective: HackerNews (https://news.ycombinator.com/) is very popular website among developers for latest news and projects. However sorting of the items is done via their own algorithms and we want to build a clone which keeps getting the top 90 articles and shows them in reverse chronological order. Requirements: Each news item will have the following fields - url,... - Source: Hacker News / 3 months ago

  • Is Google Getting Worse? A Longitudinal Investigation of SEO Spam in Search [pdf]
    3. Guessing what you want when you are anonymous is too complicated. We need your search history to tailor your search for you. Please, search engines, hear me: you can not simplify the needs and wants of 7 billion people and zettabytes of online content into a single little shitty search box! It's too complicated! At this point the only thing these search engines are good for is for finding the URL of something... - Source: Hacker News / 3 months ago
  • How Group Chats Rule the World
But if the NYT were banned from HN, you could still do that, so that's a false dichotomy. (Personally, I come here, Hacker News, URL https://news.ycombinator.com/, for Free Stuff, things I can click on without having to pay. Seems I'm not the only one. I'm happy for paywalled links to be posted myself though.). - Source: Hacker News / 3 months ago
  • A Modern Web for Hacker News – Open-Source and Seeking Feedback
For individual pages/threads I'm sent to https://news.ycombinator.com/ which is totally intolerable and useless unless I emply this user script:
       *, html, body, section, article, div, span, p, i, b, strong {.

  • A Modern Web for Hacker News – Open-Source and Seeking Feedback
On a 4k screen at 150% DPI scaling on Windows, in FireFox, I can see 30 items without scrolling on the current layout for https://news.ycombinator.com/ On this proposed format, I can see ten. I believe the existing page is definitely more dense than it needs to be, but I don't think migrating to so much whitespace that it's 30% of the information that it was is a good... - Source: Hacker News / 4 months ago
  • The Myth of 'Just Press Record' in Podcasting
Every morning, without fail, the journey begins with a hunt for content. I check trending GitHub repositories to stay updated with the latest in tech. Websites like GitHub Trending, Dev.to, Daily.dev, Hacker News and of course web development podcasts are what I use to scour for top articles on JavaScript and TypeScript. This isn't casual browsing; it's a deliberate search for engaging topics that could spark a... - Source: dev.to / 4 months ago
  • More technical AI channels?
I also follow news.ycombinator.com and it's great, but only the biggest AI news gets through. I sometimes use linkedin as well (for job as well), but it's mostly marketing fluff. I'm looking for places where there would be more of articles like https://arstechnica.com/ai/2023/12/the-real-research-behind-the-wild-rumors-about-openais-q-project/ and technical discussions, for engineers with basic ML understanding,... • Spotify cuts almost 1,600 jobs amid rising costs
All the data is available at https://news.ycombinator.com/. As a suggested experiment, randomly select 25 stories with comments>votes, and 25 stories with votes>comments. Go through the comments on those 50 stories and score them for flamewarishness. It's probably a half day's work. 50 stories * 3 minutes each for scoring, plus some time for the random sampling and... - Source: Hacker News / 5 months ago
  • Ask HN: How do you use your computer intentionally/deliberately?
When I accessed via https://news.ycombinator.com , I'd see the same story each time I visited that page. Via newsboat, I see each story once. (Also the HN frontpage scrolls on my laptop —if barely— and I have newsboat configured so that if there are too many new HN stories, I view them by subsets of alphabetical order (currently a-g, h-q, r-z but I should probably... - Source: Hacker News / 5 months ago

    > If HN goes away it's because it's replaced by something else. Have you tested the site backups? How do you know that dang's backups work? when's the last time they were tested? An act of god could take out the servers that run this place, and their backups, and the site's history and contents would be gone. you'd go to http://news.ycombinator.com and get an... - Source: Hacker News / 6 months ago

After installing the latest Chrome update, it seems that Chrome no longer displays the full address of every downloaded file in chrome://downloads/.
