Another compromise between self hosting and using "big tech" email providers is to use smaller email providers. I have been using https://kolabnow.com/ for a five years or so and am a happy customer. Likewise, I expected kolab to appear in TFA's list of evaluated options, as I knew it has been around for a while and covered most (all?) of the author's requirements.
