I'm Canadian and I used workaway.info to plan my near-future 6-month trip to Japan. I think it's about $50 USD for an annual membership. Some of the Japanese hosts pay minimum wage in their region or slightly higher in exchange for the working opportunities they provide. You have to specifically find the postings labelled 'paid position' if you're interested in that though. Source: 10 months ago

One place you're guaranteed to find that is a farming co-op/eco-village. there's many across the US. you'll have to give up on your career temporarily, but you'll have a clear daily purpose -- working the land, or whatever task you get up to; you'll have health (as fresh food and exercise are abundant in these places); and you'll definitely have your fill of community. If you are a citizen of another EU/EEA country or the UK, then there'd be no legal issue with you coming to Ireland to do farm work, but those jobs are generally very poorly paid and working conditions (and living conditions, if your employer is providing accommodation) usually aren't the best. Getting the land and putting in the work are the hardest parts. But enthusiasm for horticulture is irreplaceable. Get a few growing seasons under your belt, grow some things you like, maybe try WWOOF'ing (https://wwoof.net/) if there's a farm that strikes your fancy.
