SSHGuard might be a bit more popular than wail2ban. We know about 1 link to it since March 2021 and only 1 link to wail2ban. We are tracking product recommendations and mentions on various public social media platforms and blogs. They can help you identify which product is more popular and what people think of it.
If you can I'd recommend setting up pfsense or something similar between your home network and the outside internet. If you cannot, perhaps try to set this up. I've never used it but was curious if it existed as I've heard of the linux version (fail2ban) for years. It automatically will add firewall rules to block IP's based on conditions you set like failed logon attempts. Source: almost 3 years ago
There are now better defensive tools (I use https://sshguard.net/); not that there are any accounts on this system that are vulnerable, but it does keep the relevant logfile from growing to astronomical size. Source: about 3 years ago
