  I use virtualpostmail.com to receive all my physical mail in the USA. There might be a very rare instance where an institution would demand a residential address and you either ditch them or make sure you can have a separate mailing address on file and give them a family or past address as the residential (since any mail they send will go to your mailing address anyway). I’m guessing they are feigning ignorance about the precise letter of US tax law and hoping employees play along: assuming taxes get taken from your W2 regardless, the IRS will be happy and leave them alone and therefore you, too.
