An unexpected gift. January 07, 2018 by Michael. One of the nice things that happened last week was an fman user writing in to say that 1) fman "is THE BEST SOFTWARE" (sic). And that 2) he would like to send me a $50 tip.

14 Alternative File Managers To Replace Windows 10 File Explorer
A very simple dual-window view file manager. The only extra feature I saw was the search bar at the top that you can use to quickly access anything. However, it’s also really small in size and light on resources, so try fman if you have a slow PC.

  • Done with Pathfinder
TotalFinder is back. You need to disable SIP, but if you know what you are doing on your mac and don't open/download shady stuff, it should be fine. Source: about 1 year ago
  • What is the best alternative to the Guake terminal in macOS with the most closed-in look and functionality?
And just since visor mode was mentioned as a requirement, I'd like to mention that I also run TotalFinder which—among many other things—extends Finder into running in visor mode as well. Source: about 1 year ago
  • lol - what?
Back in 2010 I upgrade from a MDD tower Powermac to a Mac Mini (CD tray) and I was so amazed that never bought another Mac tower again. I use CCC to clone my drive to the mini and so on. Now I have that Mac Mini 2012 just for audio production. I don’t even use it for internet or anything else. I have a crossover cable to my main Mac so I can manage files between them. There some apps that I use with that Mac that... Source: over 1 year ago
  • Better Finder?
Totalfinder offers considerable improvements to the native finder app. If you are prepared to accept the install hacks. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Considering MBPs and am not sure (moving from Arch Linux on Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 7)
There is a little confusion as most macOS users are not familiar with the difference between a window manager and a window tiling manager. There are a ton of great window manager (Magnet is still one of the common ones around which you brought up, but Mosaic is my favorite. Most window apps have all the same or similar features, but Mosaic includes some really advanced layout options that you can save and then... Source: over 1 year ago

  • Best symbols in folder names to pin an important folder up top?
Use a file browser that supports jumping to a folder by frecency (examples: z (shell extension) or my-dired-recent-dirs() in my dired or https://fman.io/ for users that prefer graphical UIs). You will find out that you will prefer jumping to navigation when you're familiar with the concept. Source: almost 2 years ago
  • Ask HN: Why aren't there any real alternatives to Electron?
There are great alternatives. I used Python and Qt to create my file manager [1]. It's a tool that needs to start quickly so Electron was not an option [2]. I open sourced my build system for creating cross-platform desktop apps with it in minutes at https://build-system.fman.io/. 1: https://fman.io 2: https://fman.io/blog/picking-technologies-for-a-desktop-app-in-2016/. - Source: Hacker News / about 2 years ago
  • Explorer: Move selected files into a new folder (like on MacOS)
And for the record, I think over the years I learned to like Finder... I guess I like the sheer simplicity (I use fman) and started to love it back in OS 9 and those lovable purple hues :P. Source: about 2 years ago
  • Non-Commercial Licenses Are Non-Free Licenses
Fman by Matthew Herrmann https://fman.io From what I've gathered, success has been mixed. Duplicacy seems to be doing well based on forum activity and release history. Fman never made much money. If I recall correctly the Fman author was turned off by the number of people who criticized it for being fully open-source and wished he'd stuck with a closed-source full commercial model. I'd like for the open-source... - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
