  • A Modern Web for Hacker News – Open-Source and Seeking Feedback
It's worse than a "complicated broken mess". It doesn't work at all on iOS 14.3 (iPhone). It's just stuck displaying some glowing squares. There is an increasing number of websites which are becoming broken on iOS 14.3. https://thesaurus.com is another example; it used to work fine, until a few months ago, when they pushed a frontend update that now results in an "Unexpected application error"; not even partial... - Source: Hacker News / 4 months ago

  • How to stop repeating words while writing?
Honestly I always keep thesaurus.com open in a tab, and I'll just plug that word I want to use again in to see what else it offers me, and click through some suggestions to get to others if I still don't like those. Source: 9 months ago
  • How to write descriptively?
Instead of "long" branches, you could consider: elongated, stretching, gangling, lanky, towering, lofty, or far-reaching. All of these words I found on thesaurus.com by looking up "long." Now, consider how each of these offers a slightly different vision of this tree, some carrying emotional implications. "Towering branches" give a very different feeling than "lanky branches.". • Sam Harris #1 quote about Free Will
I don't know what to say. The act of making a choice is just to "select from two or more possibilities," as dictionary.com puts it. We do that. Cats and dogs and birds do that. Single cell amoebas do that. Trees can even be said to do that. And certainly computers do that. Even the problem Sam Harris is stating above is in the form of an if-then statement, the fundamental conditional statement upon which... Source: 4 months ago

  • Hanging vines
My wife set up a bunch of her mature vines hanging down from our entrance staircase (both sides). On the left is about a five year old String of Hearts, then Monstera (only a couple of years old), then Pothos (about five years old). The String of Hearts is about 10 feet long, but seems to still get nutrients and moisture to the end. The pothoses (strangely, that is what dictionary.com says is the plural of... • what's the meaning of imminent
This word is very interesting. I came across it in a comic. Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary's definition seems like a synonym of immediate, but dictionary.com's definition seems more suitable for the comic. Source: 7 months ago
