An embedded engine is also a much faster path to viable use cases. For example Sciter [1] has some degree of success despite implementing only a sane subset of the DOM API. That all being said: We are now all waiting on wxwidgets to release their next stable version so that we can upgrade. It makes no sense to use an unstable version of that upstream, as in its development releases it literally breaks on every patch level release. It also makes no sense to start packaging a custom version of wxgtk just for audacity (the overhead required is just not worth it). Source: about 2 years ago
