    There's nothing wrong with using Arduino, but at the end of the day they're microcontrollers and so their limits get hit pretty easily on their own. You can absolutely use an Arduino to mediate between your computer and electro-mechanical components, but something like a Beaglebone that can run a full operating system, connect to wired Ethernet, and interface with components is easier in the long run as opposed to...
