My go-to suggestions for free are Quoll Writer or Smart Edit Writer for things with a lot of the functionality of Scrivener, without the clutter or price tag, or Wavemaker if you want heavier planning tools (plot cards, time line, database etc). Source: 11 months ago

For your examples given, I use Hemingway Editor to cut down on my adverbs. Adverbs aren't bad, but I want a stronger punch with my writing and cutting down on adverbs helps (for me). It forces me to expand on the action. Passive voice is one I need to work on, personally. Cut them down, along with adverbs, I think, helps your writing a great deal. Source: 9 months ago
