Thanks for your answer! I imagined you would be using PrinceXML behind the scenes since that is probably the gold standard in HTML+CSS rendering. The only open source alternative I know of is WeasyPrint at https://weasyprint.org/. I'm not sure how well it fares against PrinceXML, though. I use Weasyprint [1] to generate a PDF from HTML, and I use a static site generator to convert Markdown to HTML. Weasyprint can handle code highlighting e.g. Using Pygments or another static framework, the only downside is it can't execute JS so if you e.g. Want to dynamically generate content to render you need to first pass your HTML through a headless browser, which is also possible though.
