Is the Verizon one a combined modem/router? If you want to add your own router, you might have to call them and ask them to put it into bridged mode. I like OpenWRT because it gives you a lot of customization options. I've just been running it on an old TP-Link Archer C7 for the past 5 years or so and I haven't had any issues, but that's ancient hardware now. Source: 10 months ago
Additonally, you can use the Asus RT-AC3200 and a range of other great Asus routers to run Advanced Tomato. As good as the Asus firmware is, it's not nearly as good as Advanced Tomato, which offers a lot of great features to scan your network environment along with a host of other things. If you can flash either Tomoto (FreshTomato or AdvancedTomato), Gargoyle, OpenWrt, or DD-WRT on it then it will be secure. It will not be as performant as a newer router obviously, but it will be secure as you have asked, so ignore the rest of the ignorant comments. Source: over 1 year ago
