For me, one of the best roguelites is Nuclear Throne. They have permadeath, they have procedural levels, the have difficulty peaks but all is set correctly. All the progress come on the skills. For all intents and purposes the game is already released. The whole thing is written in the present tense, with big play now buttons and like 2 small disclaimers saying "Note: Star Citizen Alpha 3.18 is currently available to download and play.
