DoubleCommander is really good in terms of TCMD compatibility (they run TCMD plugins!) but it's useless on a Mac. It's extremely non-native in ways that matter. It's personal preference so I'm not commenting on it. If "file explorer" by your definition is a window with have multiple columns for displaying file hierarchy, file list of current working directory, and file preview, get Pathfinder (https://cocoatech.com/).
