  • First version of nethack with a bestiary?
Prior to 3.1.x the dat subdirectory didn't exist yet but data.base was present somewhere, possibly in the src subdirectory instead. I don't know whether it goes as far back as hack 1.x or even nethack 2.x. The source code for a bunch of old versions is present at https://nethackwiki.com/ but I'm not sure whether the data files are all there too. The source code for the most recent released version (3.6.7) is... Source: 11 months ago
  • Is there a discord?
I am not sure what extra benefits the Steam version has, but the game is available for free either as download on nethack.org, or to play online at something like alt.org/nethack or hardfought.org. Source: 11 months ago
  • REMINDER: You only need two people to play D&D
You don't even need two people to play D&D, Nethack is great! Source: 12 months ago
  • I just bought factorio
I've always been fond of the last quote on nethack.org. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Went to see the video game exhibit at the NY MOMA
It was discussed here last fall, when the home page for nethack.org was updated to mention it. The blurb includes a few other tiny screen shots and says the exhibit is scheduled to be open until mid-July. Source: about 1 year ago

  • free low spec games (any)
Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup. Free roguelike with lots of options, but uncomplicated. You can run it on just about anything. Source: over 1 year ago
  • What's your #1 comfort game? THE one you can't wait to play after a long day and that you keep coming back to regardless of how many years pass.
Also, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a decent pick. It's free, so hard to beat the price. There's also no music or audio at all, which means I can listen to my own music or a podcast while I rampage through the dungeon as a Troll Berzerker, pulling apart goblins like they're made of monkey bread. Source: about 2 years ago
  • Old games to play with lofi music in the background
Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup is a good one. It is a classic-style roguelike that does not feature sound effects or music of its own. I will frequently queue up podcasts to listen to while I take a run or two. Source: about 2 years ago
  • Singleplayer/offline games for a week or two without internet that you can actually finish (not endless)? [PC]
If you're down for an older-style roguelike, Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup is free and it's optimal for a keyboard that has a 10-key (numpad) for movement. There is an endgame, but it takes a lot of luck and doing to reach it. I just poke at the game on occasion to see how far I get. Never been within any reasonable distance of the end. Source: over 2 years ago
  • [Steam] Rift Wizard (25% off / $11.24)
DCSS or Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup as it's known in full is considered to be one of the best roguelikes out there. DCSS originally released in 2006, it's a fork ofLinley's Dungeon Crawl aka. Crawl (1997) which again is based of off modified NetHack code (1987). Source: over 2 years ago
