Markdown does not support exponents. Some variants do, however. MultiMarkdown does. You can use x^2 or y^(a+b)^ for example. Source: almost 3 years ago
I'm a software engineer, and before getting my rM2, I kept all of my notes in Markdown format. They're under source control (git), and I use mkdocs to build them into a static website.
