It depends. There's a lot of people on/around IRC who really like it (see libera and all the other networks), and yeah there definitely are people spinning up new smaller networks. Especially with things like https://sr.ht/~emersion/gamja/ and self-hosted https://kiwiirc.com/ , as well as really polished client experiences like irccloud, it's easier to convince people to join in. Also, yes, you would have to open a different page (and make an account) to use discord. If you dont like the account part you could create a WebIRC server and use https://mibbit.com/ to integrate it into your webpage, but I would get someone technical to handle that lol. Source: 9 months ago

Maybe a web-based IRC client could serve you well, such as mibbit.com if you only want to get to one particular server and channel.. It might be easier to just visit a web site such as this, punch in the server, channel & nickname details, and whala.. Than to install an application if you're not particularly techie. Just 2 cents.
