I couldn't get past sign up two times, once on answermug.com (the admins wouldn't respond when I mentioned my account wasn't approved, and asked why) and hubski.com (I can log in, but I can't post or comment and the admins still haven't responded to my emails about my problem). I would check out https://raddle.me and https://beehaw.org. Both seem to be positive and cozy spaces. They might not have all the relevant communities but it's a good start. Source: 10 months ago

I've seen some other alternatives such as raddle where independent users are trying to recreate the Reddit experience with a new platform (yet it doesn't seem to use the same Karma System, make of that what you will) but I'm still curious to see where everyone is going if large parts of Reddit disappear after July 1st...
