Though FWIW my real answer, if you were asking this as a practical question rather than an educational exercise, would be to find some existing standard encryption program and use that. First of all, you will need some sort of PGP encryption suite whether you are on Mac or Windows. I use Windows, so I utilize the Kleopatra PGP client in GPG4Win.
