I used multiple free hosters in the last few months and thats the best one i found so far.
very simple to use. and if you're having trouble you can go to their discord and they will help you out. Much better than forge, more mod viarity and you can even reccomend mods on their discord.

It's definitely not a realistic replacement for modded Minecraft in general, since that's really hundereds of games and Mineclone only aims to replace Minecraft itself. For modded, I'm not sure what the answer is. Even most third party clients/servers that are compatible with vanilla Minecraft don't support Forge mods. Right now the official Minecraft VR is absolutely terrible if you have java I suggest Vivecraft or MCXR. I use MCXR because of the sodium support. If you want you can try ploud os https://ploudos.com/en/ which is a free Minecraft hosting service that allows java-bedrock crossplay(check the faq).
