Nothing quite as serious as full ISO 15066 compliance, for this project it’s just a goal and overall a proof of concept for academia so if it falls short in some areas it’s okay. It’s funny that you mention the Kinetic, we are actually using a distant relative, the Azure Kinect which, like you mentioned, has some pretty impressive accuracy and ability for what it is. The vast majority of the R&D has continued uninterrupted, though.
