  • Why do you care about Palestine?
Experiencing human stories and situations first-hand and putting a face and a name on what exactly happened is one of the best ways to gradually become slightly more enlightened. Everyone needs a passport and to travel, including to places that make them uncomfortable, to find out what life is about, to separate the real from lies, and realize there are wonders and wonderful people throughout the world. • Fascists expertly exploit the free press: Media rush to rehabilitate reputations of Trump's regime
DemocracyNow.org is a great example of publicly funded, non-corporate media if anyone's looking for alternatives. Source: about 1 year ago
  • NPR is Not Your Friend | National Public Radio began as a scrappy institution featuring the voices of average Americans. Today it’s a sterile, inoffensive corporate product that is produced, funded, and consumed by a narrow demographic of highly educated liberals.
I suggest Pacifica Radio. They haven't embraced corporate sponsors like PBS and NPR have, and are entirely funded by listeners. Founded by a couple anarcho-pacifists back in the 1950-60s. Folks might be familiar with Democracy Now. Well, that's where the show got its start, and it still airs there. Source: over 1 year ago
  • The whitewashing of Queen Elizabeth's reign
He's so... bothered! If you examine the affairs of the Crown though, it's impossible not to be. The whitewashing began almost instantly. The /r/ontario subreddit posted a pinned megathread that would not allow any critical comments about QEII, the Crown, or the monarchy. Basically every MSM news org had bootlicking and fawning for the entire coverage so far, without any criticism. Thankfully democracynow.org had... Source: over 1 year ago

  • Hash Collisions and Exploitations
I wonder if you could construct a hash collision for high pagerank sites in the google (or Bing) index. You would need to know what hash algorithm google uses to store URLs. This is assuming that they hash the URLs for their indexing. Which surely they do. MD5 and SHA1 existed when google was founded, but hash collisions weren't a big concern until later IIRC. You'd want a fast algorithm because you're having to... - Source: Hacker News / 2 months ago
  • Is there a way in US libraries to access newspaper websites which are behind a paywall?
If we (the library) want to provide access to something like the nytimes.com or economist.com websites, what we can do is essentially bulk purchase, at some discount, subscriptions that can be claimed by our users. While this may work for a university campus, it doesn't scale well for a public library for both budgetary and logistical reasons. Source: 4 months ago
  • Weirdest bug(?)
I tried to link my friends a NYTimes article but it tells me "www.nytimes.com is blocked. nytimes.com refused to connect. ERR_BLOCKED_BY_RESPONSE" and then automatically tries to load a .onion link in a tor window. Source: 5 months ago
  • drowning in safari tabs
Hello! My goal is to be able to automate tab-closing in Safari. I have hundreds of tab groups in Safari and many contain web pages that I no longer need. It would take me days to organize and manually go through them to close them. For example. I would love to close any tab that contains "gmail.com" or "nytimes.com" etc. Source: 9 months ago
  • Google to block news in Canada over law on paying publishers
It's lazy to know that the NYT writes an article and google search that article. Go to the browser and type nytimes.com. Source: 9 months ago
