If you are extremely worried about root kits you would need to start with a clean system and then whitelist any "positives". If your concerned you would have to use the tedious method of using dpkg to determine what package a file belongs to, one at a time, and then compare it's checksum to the back installed... Disable all of your chrome extensions one by one to see if you can find the culprit. Run adwcleaner from Malwarebytes (https://malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner/) in the settings make sure the switch to reset the hosts file is enablee, then hitmanpro (https://www.sophos.com/en-us/free-tools/hitmanpro).
