I've been using the Camo app for over a year. Works excellent. Even supports viewing the camera over wifi. No cable necessary. It is free for a basic account. Find it here: https://reincubate.com/camo/. - Source: Hacker News / 6 months ago
Just found a good one that works great with a cable connection: https://reincubate.com/camo/. Source: 10 months ago
Maybe try Reincubate Camo, a software to use the iPhone as camera which is independent of Apple's continuity. I used it on windows when working at home in 2020 and 2021 during pandemic, and it had quite good video quality superior to built in cam of my laptop. They have it also for MacOS. Maybe it's compatible with your MacBook Pro. Source: 11 months ago
I know you said you don’t want to use continuity camera but if you had an iPad or spare phone (doesn’t need to have a sim), you could use Camo. Source: 12 months ago
You can use Star Citizen's built in FOIP: all you need is a basic webcam or even an old smart phone. If you have a spare android phone lying around, Droidcam will work. If you have a spare iPhone lying around, reincubate camo studio will work. Source: about 1 year ago

I'm a big fan of Reaper (reaper.fm). It's technically not free, but $60 is totally worth it, plus you can trial it full featured, indefinitely. Source: 5 months ago
If you use the Linux port, you may want to use Yabridge to load Windows VSTs in a transparent way. http://reaper.fm/ https://github.com/robbert-vdh/yabridge. - Source: Hacker News / 6 months ago
My recommendation would be Reaper from reaper.fm Reaper is used in the video game industry due to it's customization, routing, batch processing and scripting capabilities. It's very customizable and has small CPU footprint. Source: 9 months ago
Audio only? Don't torture yourself. Reaper's based on the early Vegas platform, easy to learn and use, and one of the most powerful audio editing tools out there: http://reaper.fm/. Source: 9 months ago
