  • Is NLP the only way to extract specific data out of passages and short texts?
But you don't have to. What you can also do is, as you already suggested get a list of titles from somewhere (say, from a database of ISBNs or scrape them from Amazon) and perform simple string to string matching (maybe with some fuzziness to account for variation in spelling, where NLP techniques might help). In fact, I would recommend that because titles generally vary a lot, from single words to phrases or... Source: about 2 years ago
  • Where do the likes of GoodReads or The StoryGraph get their books from?
Https://isbndb.com/ - they don't have a free plan, so I was not able to test their data yet. Source: over 2 years ago
  • A custom menu to find ISBN numbers isn't working?
Yes I've not have the time to look into it. There is an API but it will cost you $10.. Source: over 2 years ago
  • I made a website where you can find and rate foreign books according to your language level. I hope it helps to build an awesome foreign book community where everyone can find a book for a certain level.
Do you mind if I ask what database you're using? I've played around with isbndb but yours is a lot better. I like to play around with different types of categorization for books and would LOVE access to this data xD. Source: over 2 years ago

  • FOSS lending system for $stuff
We are lending stuff like books, laptops, beer benches (hallo freunde) and other stuff. Currently we are using librebooking, but obviously this is not the intended use case. Stuff like maximum lended objects is relevant to us. I saw koha which looks promising, but as it is intended for a library it has any features we dont need, such as acquistion. Any ideas? • What would be the easiest way to catalog every prop my school drama department has?
On the harder side of the world, there are entire open source products like Koha (https://koha-community.org) and Evergreen (https://evergreen-ils.org) that are capable of running large libraries, but require installation and systems maintenance. On the easier, something like Librarycat (https://www.librarycat.org) might work fine for your needs (and if you end up using it, lmk...the developer is a friend) or... Source: over 1 year ago
