That Dream Machine thing looks super awesome; but for cameras, I think it's massively overkill and a waste of money. I'd go with a cheap switch (just make sure it's gigabit) and set up a Blue Iris or Blue Cherry server on a NAS or NUC or something. Someone with an IT background will probably never be happy with a Fisher-Price toy NVR. Check out Blue Iris which runs on a Windows PC of sufficient CPU, add one of the Western Digital Purple things of enough TB of storage to hold the video and you are still likely below the cost of a comparable system.
