  I have been using MATE for a couple of years now on an Intel Mac mini and it works... mostly. Things I am not a fan of: 1) Snap packages.   Maybe getting in touch with bodies publishing in the field of math (American Mathematical Society, journals) offers a trail to font designers / companies (like Linotype).
