I've been using the Camo app for over a year. Works excellent. Even supports viewing the camera over wifi. No cable necessary. It is free for a basic account. Find it here: https://reincubate.com/camo/. - Source: Hacker News / 7 months ago

Maybe try Reincubate Camo, a software to use the iPhone as camera which is independent of Apple's continuity. I used it on windows when working at home in 2020 and 2021 during pandemic, and it had quite good video quality superior to built in cam of my laptop. They have it also for MacOS. Maybe it's compatible with your MacBook Pro. Source: 12 months ago
I know you said you don’t want to use continuity camera but if you had an iPad or spare phone (doesn’t need to have a sim), you could use Camo. Source: about 1 year ago
You can use Star Citizen's built in FOIP: all you need is a basic webcam or even an old smart phone. If you have a spare android phone lying around, Droidcam will work. If you have a spare iPhone lying around, reincubate camo studio will work. Source: about 1 year ago
Have Camo set up on my phone(S22+) and PC already. Source: over 1 year ago
Try https://getlumina.com/ for a phone quality looking webcam with nice background blur and center-stage type auto-framing. Or, Logitech Brio w/ Xsplit Vcam (but Lumina does a better job auto-starting with videoconf tools). Alternatively, get Reincubate's Camo to do Continuity with both iPhones and Android phones, and tons more features: https://reincubate.com/camo/. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago

How soon do you need it a webcam? The Opal C1 is a very nice camera, but the wait list is long; you could run Camo to use your phone as an camera or wait for the Continuity Camera updates in Ventura to use an iPhone. Source: over 1 year ago

If you have an iPhone, Camo is great and buy a cheap mount for it. I've not compared it to a professional setup but it's pretty convenient to use. Source: almost 2 years ago
If you want something to hold you over until the Opal is more widely available, consider using your phone plus EpocCam or Camo. Source: about 2 years ago
I recently bought a Mac Mini M1 (arriving this week!) and had the same question regarding webcam with the same budget. I also checked those cameras and couldn't get myself into buying any, they jsut had poor reviews overall and the support for M1 chips wasn't clear (I think some updates on logitech firmware fixed the issues). Eventually I found we can use our phones as a webcam and since I have an old iPhone 6s... Source: about 2 years ago
