Amazon does have a program where independent films can end up on the platform, but it isn't Amazon "buying" the project in any way. It's called Prime Video Direct and it lets independent film makers put their stuff on Amazon and Amazon takes a cut of any revenue generated. Source: over 1 year ago

Unlike netflix/other big streaming services, amazon lets people upload their own content to the platform and make a (scant) profit through prime video direct. There are some hoops to jump through still, so the uploading process is more complex and than, say, youtube's, but it also comes across as more professional/impressive as it's on a paid SVOD service - and amazon gives out bonuses to direct films that do... There's some merit to this, Amazon will almost certainly control the majority of views of MGM movies. Main difference is, movie theaters are hard to build, and in the old system, Paramount theaters only showed Paramount movies, so it was extremely hard for indie movies to be shown anywhere. I'm not OP, but for what it's worth, essentially anyone can submit content to Prime via Prime Video Direct. A lot of Indie producers play this game where they boast "it's a Prime series" or "Prime movie" even though they just went the direct route and it carries no prestige whatsoever.
