Accept that the condition will not match the pictures but read reviews to prepare yourself. Know that generally disgruntled people are the ones who write reviews so if it's rated 3/5 it's not going to be great but it's likely not as bad as it seems. Scope out the area on google streetview, join local facebook groups and ask for recommendations, feedback, and better areas to live. And if you have anybody to speak to including your boss at your new job, ask them for advice, too.

Well, if you didn't have any where you came from, starting without isn't any change at the very least. If you're moving somewhere that you have a job lined up, get it through work. If there's a wait period, healthcare.gov for essential coverage or more depending on need/affordability.
