Now... there's one more wrinkle in this. In some locations I have heard that telus is switching to CGNAT and this will almost certainly prevent this from working for you. To determine if you're on CGNAT, log in to your router and find a screen where it tells you your external IP address. It might be something like 50.1.99.22 or something. Then visit http://ifconfig.me and observe the IP address returned by that site. If it does not match the external IP address of your router, then you're unfortunately on CGNAT and there's no way to make this work.

Your computer needs a static IP. This can be set either manually at the operating system level, or via DHCP. Once this is done the things you should test are a) that the computer works and can still access the internet and b) that another computer or device on your home network can ping that first computer. If you don't have another computer, I have had good success using the hurricane electric network tools running on a phone or tablet.
