Vanilla JS

Things may have changed, or you may have been shown dated resources. A lot of modern JavaScript APIs were created in direct response to jQuery because it was so much better than vanilla JS back then. Now, the difference is pretty minor, and often quite annoying (vanilla JS can't catch jQuery events in many cases). I use jQuery at work because we have old dependencies that depend on it, but for new projects, there shouldn't be a lot of compelling reasons to still use it: http://vanilla-js.com/.
