Eli5: Why do websites want you to download their app?

Recommended and mentioned products

  1. Pi-hole is a multi-platform, network-wide ad blocker.

That's where pi-hole or DuckDuckGo's app tracking protection come in very handy.
  2. Reddit's web page has great support for mobile, no need for a dedicated application.

  3. The simple, powerful firewall that blocks tracking, ads, badware and more.

  4. GrapheneOS is an open source privacy and security focused mobile OS with Android app compatibility.

If people want a more secure and private Android experience, I recommend checking out https://grapheneos.org/.
  5. An ad blocker that uses the hosts file. For Android, requires root.

I use AdAway. They're an OG in Android ad blocking. I've been using their app for at least 11 years, maybe 12! It works great, but you need root.
