    For academic work, I suggest Sioyek, which has some nice features pertaining to cross-references and citations and custom highlighting, and also supports SyncTeX.

    Okular is a universal document viewer based developed by KDE.
    You didn't say what OS you're using, but on linux the best of the poppler-based PDF viewers are probably qpdfview (lighter weight) and okular (heavier but more features), both of which have good synctex support as well.
