Bootstrap yourself with freelance work right from the start. I tried elance.com (now upwork.com) years ago and holy fuck this is not a get-rich-quick scheme. The idea is that you start out making ridiculously cheap bids to get the work, then earn reputation through doing that well, and gradually are able to increase your rates. Of course there's no mentorship doing it this way, so unless you're super good at self-directed learning and you don't mind starving to death for a couple of years.
