    My point is that the protocol is so complex that you can't know for sure whether you really aren't contacting a third party system. The article I linked showed for example that when you sign in to your account it tries to contact the identity server without ever letting you know. And the default one is matrix.org and if you have a cell phone number or email associated with your account, that gets sent.
