Last.fm

I have my Spotify hooked up to last.fm and that similar artists feature there is amazing. I would take a similar artist and then see in there is a Sound of (artist) list on Spotify. If a number of songs stick out, I start a deep dive on that artist and then repeat based on similar artist feature on last.fm.

Rate Your Music

But, and I think I might be late to the party here, I also recently discovered and got into http://rateyourmusic.com. Great to enter an album or artist you like, see what genre it calls it, and then browsing more stuff from that genre. The Chart feature can also be amazingly powerful.

Spotify is the worst place for me to discover music. On the other hand, I found most of my favorite artists and songs on BandCamp, VGMRips or Modarchive (there is also OpenGameArt and Khinsider thing for video game soundtracks on which I discovered fav songs).
