Surge - another free synth, A LOT of cool features, I don't even want to buy any popular synth VST anymore, because this one covers all my needs, and I think after quite a while of using it, I still did not try all the features it provides; Really cool stuff, but maybe requires some time to learn it; You can just play with presets even; A lot of them are here;.

Vital is a spectral warping wavetable synthesizer with drag'n'drop modulation workflow and animated preview of the synth's inner workings where needed. Comes with many modulation sources (including audio-rate), MPE support and FX chain.
Https://vital.audio/ - project by Matt Tytel and for some reason he puts this out for free. It is definitely worth more than nothing.

It may be too complex compared to your project but vcv rack is a good free software with lots of free and open source modules to do modular synthesis.
