Taskbar System Monitoring for Windows
I use monitor apps like xMeters (CPU Load) and CoreTemp (CPU Temp. More temp = more sustained CPU load) to monitor my normal state. Using BatteryMon gives you a visual graph so you can see where your battery life is going and change your behviour to be more efficient.

You can use the Task Manager Process page to find which individual apps are contributing to CPU Load. You can also use Process Explorer which I needed for detailed trouble shooting of some rogue processes on my SP3.
