Totally agree on the security risk. On the other hand setting up, maintaining and explaining PGP for non-technical users usually leads to not using encryption at all, which is by far less secure than a self-managed PGP gateway on a private mail server setup. I'm aware of the few UX friendly implementations like eM client or pEp, but even those are for most not easy or "automatic" to use. (especially without good companion implementations on the smart phone).

The reason why such an email server solution would be the 'killer app' is because we have basically lost control over email communication. There's no way of avoiding email and yet most email addresses are in the hand of very few providers who have no intentions making communication encrypted by default. Because it is very lucrative to scan your emails for cross selling recommendation and surveillance. Companies like Apple want you to encrypt sensitive emails to them but they don't make secure communication easy. Companies like Protonmail make secure communication trivial but they aren't popular. And of course you can't self host Protonmail yet (only the frontend is free software).

  10. Self-hosted server for the ProtonMail client.
Two devs once started implementing a free ProtonMail server but they abandoned it. It's understandable, since it's a lot of work.
